Me and Alex after finishing Leg 2 of the Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay 2026

2026 marked my third attempt at being part of the Totley AC Team for the Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay. As a club we’ll generally only get one entry so in 2024 I was over-the-moon to get to do one of my bucket-list races. I had a good summer running season but was struck down with plantar faciatis in my foot so had to sadly give up my place in the team. In 2025 the weather was terrible so the race was cancelled. 2026, however, the stars finally aligned.

Eight runners, four pairs, and a day of running up and down Lakeland mountains. Each pair runs one of four legs before handing the dibber over to the next pair. The race is fairly easy to explain, but getting around it, as it turns out, takes bit more effort.

The 3rd October rolled around and we set off from Totley to our first stop, the Elterwater Inn to meet up with the rest of our team. The race starts and finishes in Patterdale on the King George V Playing Field and is limted to 70 teams, almost all from clubs in the North of England.

The full circular route is around 36km (22.4 miles), with around 2,700m of ascent overall. Leg 1 is Patterdale to Hartsop, via Angle Tarn – 6.7km / 440m. Leg 2 is Hartsop to Kirkstone Pass, via High Street – 11km / 890m. Leg 3 is Kirkstone Pass to Hartsop Hall, via Red Screes – 7.5km / 570m. And leg 4 is Hartsop Hall back to Patterdale, via Hart Crag and St Sunday Crag 11km / 900m
