As we’ have ‘ve all no doubt experienced, phone signals can be very intermittent or often non-existent when you’re out on the remote hills meaning it’s not always possible to make a phone call in an emergency.
However, even if there appears to be no mobile signal, a text message will sometimes get through when your phone picks up an intermittent signal. Being able to send a text message to the emergency services in the event of an accident in a remote location could mean the difference between life and death for fell runners or walkers.
The Relay service in the UK does exactly that. It allows you to contact the emergency services by text message provided you have pre-registered your phone.
To register to use this service, simply text the word ‘register’ to 999. Next, fully read the message you receive and follow the instructions to confirm your registration.
